€1,50 Krustenbraten im Brötchen

This is typical German fast food at its finest right here. Krustenbraten im Brötchen is simply "Pork Roast with Crackling in a Bread Bun." Add ketchup and mustard like we did if you so choose :) We snacked on this badboy at real supermarket. Ya see, some real locations have a Meistermetzger food cart at the front, at which one can copp one of these. Just beware of 2 things: 1. The lines can get crazy long around lunchtime. & 2. The meat's rather salty (aber wenn du ein Salttooth bist, es ist egal).

#lunch #floor #eggs

So, let me explain. It was a crazy day sometime last week when we bought a used Ikea couch from friends moving outta Braunschweig and luckily had Megan and her cuzzo help us transport the couch from the girls' place to our place. By the time we had finished it was late in the afternoon and we were dyyyyying for lunch. Then André made the fluffiest scrambled eggs ever and we ate it with Brötchen, ketchup and hot sauce. Because we also had to eat while sitting on the floor (the couch hadn't been assembled yet + the flat was a mess) it was and will forever remain an MMM (most memorable meal).

Seelachsbrötchen ― WTF IS IT??!

Untitled

...a bread roll filled with 3-5 pieces of chopped raw onions and salted (redder than red) pollack fish. Beware: This thing really is %&$#ing SALTY! So if you're not prepared with water or some kind of beverage to chase it down, don't even attempt to eat it. I recently saw and tried this badboy for the first time at the Hamburg Fish Market. For €2,50 a pop, I shoulda opted for the Matjes Brötchen instead :/

Laugenbrötchen mit Mohn und Sesam

Untitled

It's my absolute fave type of bread at the moment. Before your very eyes is a Lye Bread Roll (Laugenbrötchen) sprinkled with sesame seeds (Sesam) and poppy seeds (Mohn). Here in Germany, baked goods made from lye are very popular. North Americans would know of only one baked good made from lye: pretzels. But here, they have heaps more baked goods made from the same batter as pretzels! As you can imagine, all lye-based products are slightly salty (which makes them so damn good). Thank God Leda introduced me to Kollwitz Bäckerei, the café (Prenzlauerberg, Berlin) where I enjoyed this sandwich. Mozz & tom is a classic, but just Nutella instead would've also been good.

Typical German Breakfast

Ain't no peanut butter here, so you can stop craving it right about now. It seems to me that Germans just ain't fond of sweet stuff for breakfast. Don't get me wrong, they're big fans of chocolate-y cereals and Nutella too. But on weekends, when people have the time to sit down with familia, typically, the German breakfast table consists of the following:

Sliced meat, sliced meat and more sliced meat!!! Fresh bread rolls (Brötchen) and/or sliced bread (Brot), typically of the rye variety. Cheese (Käse) of all sorts, though packaged Gouda slices seems to be a common favourite. If you're lucky, there'll also be smoked salmon (Lachs) and boiled eggs. And without a doubt, there'll be lots and lots of freshly-brewed coffee (Kaffee). Guten appetit, folks!
