Crêpes vs. Galettes

You all already know that crêpes are somewhat of an institution in France. But to be honest, they were never so OMG for me. Maybe I'm more of a North American-style pancake chick? Anyway, here are some of the crêpes we recently tried in Paris. Whoops — let me correct myself. Technically speaking, crêpes only refer to those made with wheat flour. Those made with buckwheat flour are called galettes. So what ya'll see here is a nutella crêpe from Richard Lenior Marché, a pre-packaged galette filled with bacon and goat cheese from some supermarket chain that I can't remember right now, and (drumroll please)... the "Complète" galette from Crêperie Bretonne Fleurie.

Filled with ham and gruyère cheese and topped off with a wobbly, half-cooked egg, the Complète lived up to everything I expected it to be. I especially loved its crispiness (reminded me of dosas from India), a texture I think would be hard to recreate if I made it at home. I spotted one guy in the resto using his fork to break the egg and spread its yellow-y goodness all over the galette. A fine idea for next time! Washed down the Complète with Val de Rance cider and it was smooth sailing for the rest of the day.

Gelato Madness!!! #Rome #Italy

Straight up, the gelato is great is Italy and all, but Germany's got some wickeddd gelato going on to. And it's about 0,70-1,00 Euro per scoop here. The cones in Rome were priced at 1,50-2,00 Euros per scoop! Absolute lunacy! In any case, what you see here is a gelato flavour called "Variegated Nutella." The strangeass name is what lured me into trying it. Couldn't tell ya which gelato shop it's from... all I know is that it's somewhere amongst the narrow cobblestone streets in the Trastevere 'hood. (woo!)

"Madd chocolate-y" is the term I'd use to describe this flave. I would have enjoyed 60% vanilla gelato with 40% Nutella gelato. Instead, this thing was close to 80% Nutella flavour! Wayyyyy sweet. And though it tasted good, the Nutella gelato was closer in consistency to a spread, so it was runny and melted super fast. Enjoyable, but definitely not a flavour I could eat every day. Ah well. #YOLO

YIPEEEEEE! Well. These mini gelato cones have a special story indeed. Let's just say, I kept seeing them on my last trip to Italy back in 2009, and never ended up having the chance to try one! As such, I made it a priority to finally do so during our recent trip to Rome. Simply put, they're small scoops of gelato coated with chocolate, white chocolate, pink chocolate or green chocolate (LOL). But they're oh so cute, handy and fun to eat! I tried the chocolate-coated mini cone, which had hazelnut gelato inside.

Faded Nutella like Whoa

...HA HA HA! Don't ask. It was some crêpe joint that we passed by in one of the little Croatian towns. And they had stacks on stacks on stacks of fadedass oversized plastic Nutella jars sitting right next to the crêpe artist (not pictured here). Needless to say, I was overwhelmed by sheer fascination.

[Part 1] Breakfast in Bed / Frühstück im Bett

It's different every day but, here's what a typical breakfast for us looks like. Sliced bread (Brot) with: cream cheese (Frischkäse) and salami, ham (Schinken) with wholegrain mustard (Grober Senf), Gouda with tomato paste (Tomatenmark) and curry powder (Currypulver), plain ol' liverwurst (Leberwurst) all on its own... and last but not least, because I'm so Canadian, and because I have to have at least one sweet slice of bread to counter all the savoury slices... peanut butter (Erdnussbutter) and Nutella!!!
